Stubborn All-Nighter In California Senate

California senators failed to agree on a budget Friday night, even after being locked in the Senate all night by Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata. The Democratic-majority Senate needed just two Republican votes to approve the $145 billion proposed budget, but even being locked up all night failed to gain the necessary votes. Republican lawmakers chatted, listened to their iPods, slept on their desks, and drank beer and wine out of plastic cups on the balcony. Perata finally allowed the senators to leave at 10am on Saturday when it became clear that the Republican votes would not be forthcoming.
