Things are definitely heating up on the Turkish border with Iraq since Kurdish guerrillas killed 4 Turkish soldiers in the south of their country last week. Tens of thousands of troops are now massed on the border and the Turkish president has promised to retaliate if the United States fails to effectively quell the belligerent parties. There were some reports that Turkish gunships flew into Kurdish territories today and fired into several villages — believed to be separatist hide-outs — but officials deny that this occurred. The United States is urging her ally to stand down, since this confrontation threatens to destabilize the only relatively calm region of the country.
