Dog fighting has been illegal throughout the USA for some time, and a felony in 46 states (not including ID, IA, WV and WY); cockfighting has been a felony in 33 states and was still legal in Louisiana (New Mexico only just banned cockfights in March). But a new law just passed through Congress that makes all animal fighting a federal felony in the United States, punishable by up to three years in prison . Specific activities that are banned are
- Buying, selling or transporting animals across state or international borders for the purpose of fighting
- Knowingly sponsoring or exhibiting an animal fight
- Buying, selling or transporting knives, gaffs and other weapons used in cockfighting
“With this law, we can clamp down on these cruel, inhumane practices,” said U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell, D-Wash, the bill’s chief Senate sponsor.
